ERNEST HEMINGWAY Signed OLD MAN AND THE SEA Limited Editions Club EISENSTAEDT LE

For sale is a signed, limited edition of Ernest Hemingway's classic novel Old Man and the Sea illustrated by legendary photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt and produced by the Limited Editions Club in 1990. This edition was limited to 600 Signed copies. This is copy 334 and is pencil signed by Eisenstaedt. The book contains 5 photogravure. Each photogravure is reproduced from the original negatives Eisenstaedt took in 1952 for Life Magazine, in which Hemingway's novel first appeared. The book is quarter bound in blue goatskin and beautiful linen boards. The spine lettering is stamped in 22 karat gold. The book is printed on French-made Arches paper.

The sale includes the original felt-lined clamshell case that has a black leather spine label with gilt lettering. The book is in fine condition with only a small amount of rubbing to the top and bottom of spine, see photos. The clamshell case is in near fine condition with mild wear to the sides and top and bottom boards, and a small dent to the two front corners, the fabric of one corner slightly worn, see photos. The sale includes the LEC letter.

About Old Man and the Sea. It was this work, first published in 1952, that won Hemingway a Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1953. This success served to spur a re-examination of his work, which would eventually lead to his winning The Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea , and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style" (The Nobel Foundation).
