The ten artist proofs were in in addition to the 35 numbered print sets produced in conjunction with the release of the Limited Editions Club publication of Hershey's book Hiroshima in 1983. As a part of the LEC production, Lawrence did eight paintings related to scenes in the book. Those paintings were transformed into multi-color screenprints that were reproduced in the limited edition book and the limited edition prints. The screenprint is in near fine condition with only minor foxing to the lower section of the paper below the image, see photos. The image itself does not appear to be affected by the foxing. The image colors are vibrant and bright. The back of the print shows areas of foxing and discoloration, see photos. The matting also shows some foxing, see photos. To make illustrations for a book of his choice. John Herseys 1946 account of six survivors of the first atomic bomb attack. The result was a series of eight paintings inspired by Herseys text to rank among Lawrences most powerful visual statements that evokes. The physical and emotional impact of the Hiroshima bombing. Series Lawrence wrote: Several years ago I was invited by the Limited Editions Club of New York to illustrate a book of my choosing from a list of the club's many titles. I selected the book Hiroshima, written by the brilliant writer John Hersey. This work was selected because of its power, insight, scope, and sensitivity as well as for its overall content. My intent was to illustrate a series of events that were taking place at the moment of the dropping of the bomb... The challenge for me was to execute eight works: a marketplace, a playground, a street scene, a park, farmers, a family scene, a man with birds, and a boy with a kite. Not a particular country, not a particular city and not a particular people. Let me know if you have any questions or would like to see more pictures.
