Limited Editions Club 1941 Hawthorne Scarlet Letter Henry Varnum Poor Signed LEC. We hope you enjoy the photos and information presented herein. If you have any questions.
High-grade, 1941 Limited Editions Club release of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, The Scarlet Letter, translated by F. Vizelelly, and considered one of the ten greatest classics of American literature. Featuring an introduction by Dorothy Canfield. Bound in New England, at the Providence Akerman-Standard. Signed by the illustrator of this edition, Henry Varnum Poor.
Poor created 49 lithographs on stone for the edition in the shop of George C. Printed on special ragstock from Worthy, presenting a sharp contrast to the bold black of the Bodini 175 typeface. This is number 943 of 1,500. 407 page, octavo (6-1/4" x 9-3/8") bound in scarlet stained sheepskin. On the cover, on a black leather label in gold bas-relief, is stamped Hester Prynne.
The book appears to show no signs of being read, though the spine is properly relaxed and the cover and pages open easily. The only wear is a small degree of rubbing to the red leather edges (see pics). No wear of any kind is detected in the book.
Paper has an even, consistent tone. This book has been properly stored indoors and away from light, in a smoke free household. The slipcase shows some surface deterioration to a few spots, where the top layer of paper has simply degraded in a natural way (see third photo). There is a small, flea-sized spot of white showing near the top edge of the spine (underying binding material) and the silk along this edge is a bit soft for the first inch or so. The grade of Fine to applies to the book only. This is the nicest collectors grade copy you will come across. We guarantee you will be thrilled with the quality and offer a full return if unsatisfied for any reason. The Limited Editions Club was founded in 1929 by George Macy with the intent of publishing beautifully illustrated and designed classic literature for a limited number of subscribers.
