The Old Man and the Sea Ernest Hemingway A limited edition of 600. With five photogravures by Alfred Eisenstaedt and signed by Eisenstaedt Published in 1990, Limited Editions Club.
This is a rare limited edition of The Old Man and the Sea , by Ernest Hemingway. The book is illustrated with five striking photogravures by Alfred Eisenstaedt, and signed by the artist in the colophon.
The photos were taken by Eisenstaedt in 1952, when he visited Hemingway in Cuba, prior to the publication of the novella in Life magazine. The images (including the Glorieta Bar and of the Cuban shore) were printed from the negatives. This is copy number 331 of 600 signed copies. The binding is a turquoise-blue goatskin spine, with buckram-linen covers. The clamshell case is lined in dark blue suede. The book is just over 11" x 15" (longer than it is tall). The monthly newsletter is included, which contains all the details of the production of the book. The only internal markings (other than the artist's signature) are a previous bookseller's price, written lightly in pencil. Book is fine, no flaws whatsoever. The deep turquoise goatskin of the spine has not faded in any way. The clamshell case has one cosmetic flaw: one side has uneven sun fading (see photo).
