THE COMPLEAT ANGLER; OR THE CONTEMPLATIVE MAN'S RECREATION: Being a Discourse of Fish and Fishing for the perusal of Anglers, by Izaak Walton; with Instructions, How to Angle for a trout or grayling in a Clear Stream, by Charles Cotton; and with an introduction by James Russell. New York: Limited Editions Club, 1948. Illustrated with 12 hand-wiped, hand-pulled, copper engravings by Douglas W. Gorsline, and 40 wash drawings.

Page count: xlii, 316, [2]. Limited to 1500 copies signed by the artist, this being a lettered presentation copy, D. Bound in quarter gilt-decorated ivory calf and decorated boards.

The paper is a fine handmade-like sheet from the Worthy Mill in England. The typeface is what LEC refers to as the Bruce Rogers Shakespeare type.

Printed letterpress by the Aldus printers. This is one of the more outstanding of the Limited Editions Club publications. It's presentation value, and association between two well-known men of their time make this copy exceptional. George Macy, founder of the Limited Editions Club inscribed and signed this copy on the front free endpaper to Delbert Clark, author and New York Times correspondent, head of the Washington Bureau.

Many of Clark's articles for the Times dealt with WW II, post war Europe, the Nuremberg trials, and the Nazis. Clark was involved peripherally in the infamous McCarthy hearings during the 1950s, and is mentioned in the film, Goodnight and Goodluck.

Macy's inscription is warm and jovial. He has inscribed the volume on the colophon as well, D. CONDITION : The surface of the spine is rubbed with loss of some of the gilt-decoration and polished surface giving the spine a soft suede-like look. Several short and thin, mostly faint, white lines on the rear board, with the front board fine except for a very small portion of the paper skinned (upper-right fore edge). The text block is in fine condition, as are all the illustrations. The LEC would have done well to use tissue guards. Having not done so has resulted in some offsetting from the 12 copperplates, which, of course, is intrinsic to all copies of this volume. The plain-paper slipcase is repaired, but quite sound and sturdy. It is unevenly faded on the front and back of the case; all 3 edges of the box are evenly faded. TERMS : I make a determined effort to accurately describe each book. I pack with extreme care.
