This is the 1933 Limited Editions Club edition of Hamlet, not the later printing as one of the complete set of Shakespeare plays published by the LEC. The illustrations are beautiful, like all Eric Gill wood engravings.
Gill was highly regarded as a sculptor in stone, copper, and wood and made his creations for a variety of uses, including tombstones, corner stone inscriptions, copper engravings, types, etc. His lines are sharp and clear, and even mystic, as he was very religious and gave his work that quality. The paper for this edition is made by hand, at the English mills of J. Barcham Green, to the specifications of Hague & Gill.
It is not dead white, but is called a Barcham Green, tending toward a grey. The color is soft and soothing to the eye.
It is made of rags only, and has the pleasing crackle of linen, and is obviously made for permanence. Its surface is slightly coarse. Many of the pages are uncut. Printed by Rene Hague, each sheet was damped.A sheet of fine rag paper, damped before printing and then permitted to dry, acquires a lovely quality, and this is lovely paper. The type was designed by Mr. Gill, and each page is set by hand by Mr.
Rene Hague of Hague and Gill, High Wycombe. Throughout the text there are large and decorative initials, to begin the acts and scenes. Each of these was cut in wood by Mr. The illustrations are of the same craftsmanship: a decorative title page cut in wood, and a large wood block to initiate each act.The binding is full English pigskin. The color is tan, like a saddle. Front, back and spine, the binding is decorated with a design by Mr. When it came time to make a brass die for decorating the binding, like everything else, Gill took charge and sent for the brass and cut the die himself!
Every step of the way, this amazingly crafted book bears the love and expertise of Eric Gill. It is number 946 of 1500 and is inscribed by Eric Gill. The offer includes the four page (1933) Limited Editions Club Monthly Letter as well as a page with photographs of Mr. Gill and the places of production of the book.
This is not only a must have for serious collectors of LEC titles, but a prized possession for any lover of Shakespeare or English literature, be it a dedicated or amateur scholar.
