This is a beautiful copy of a book that seldom comes up for sale, certainly not in this condition and with the accompanying memorabilia. The Bridge of San Luis Rey , about five casual Peruvians lodged in a deep gorge by the collapse of "the finest bridge in all Peru, " was not only the leading American fiction title of 1928 but also won the Pulitzer Prize that year for its celebrated author and playwright, Thornton Wilder. Jean Charlot then made his drawings directly on the plates, one plate for each color. The artist's style is unique, and these are simply gorgeous and unique drawings produced over many meticulous stages. The book was designed by Peter Oldenburg.

The printing of the text was performed by Bert Clarke and David Way, operators of The Thistle Press of New York. The natural laid rag paper was specially manufactured for the book by the Curtis Paper Company of Newark, Delaware, where fathers and grandfathers worked at the small mill. The three-piece binding consists of a black morocco spine with a gold label, and sides covered with natural buckram bearing a silhouette frieze of the Bridge's doomed pedestrians, stamped on both front and back covers. This is copy number 588 of 1500 and is signed by Jean Charlot. The offer includes both the four page Limited Editions Club Monthly Letter and the pre-publication announcement. This would make a terrific gift to any lovers of great American writers/playwrights, admirers of books produced by hand in many stages by gifted craftsmen or serious readers of any age.
