No foxing, no written inscriptions or notations, no ex-libris/bookplates. LEC Monthly Letter not included. Strictly speaking, if judged against all modern private press books (1890 to 2018) this would be rated as VG ++. However, if you are an experienced collector of Limited Edition Club (LEC) books, you know better. When compared against all other copies of the LEC Moby Dick you are likely to encounter, this is pretty close to "as good as it gets". Because the book was given the dreaded full sheepskin leather binding and is rarely found in decent, collectible condition. Sheepskin is not a suitable leather for fine binding of any sort and will never be used by fine/professional bookbinders. Over time, it dries, cracks, crumbles and literally deteriorates which is what has happened to the vast majority of the LEC Moby Dick editions. This is one of the ultra-rare LEC Moby Dick copies that is truly in collectible condition in the original black sheepskin leather bindings. The black sheepskin has faded to dark brown at the spines. However, the crumbling, deterioration, loss of large chunks of leather throughout the spines, especially at the tops and bottoms, are notably absent in these books. The leather has retained much of its original moisture and does not exhibit the drying and cracking found in the vast majority of copies. Of course - it ALWAYS is! For a copy which is badly damaged and not in collectible condition is really not an option. And, you probably know from experience that you are unlikely to find a copy in better condition than this one.
You may well wait 4-5 years to find one and if offered by a fine & rare (professional) bookseller, the asking price will be substantially higher. This can easily be verified by periodically checking available copies on Abebooks. This two-volumes set will come with custom archival crystal-clear DuraLar dustwrappers, which will go a long way toward preventing the drying and cracking of the sheepskin leather than almost always occurs over time.Sale is final and is restricted to North American residents. Please specify - it will be done at my cost - no more. Books will be carefully protected with bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts and sent in a sturdy UPS box. Trust me - I know how to do this and books will arrive intact. Book will not be sent until a personal check clears. The item "Moby Dick by Herman Melville LIMITED EDITIONS CLUB 2 vols.
