Todesfuge or Deathfuge, the most famous poem about the holocaust, first published in 1948 by the poet Paul Celan. In addition to a CD recording of Celan reading the poem in the original German, the poem is presented first in German and then in English. It is followed by Felstiner's commentary. The work is also illustrated by a frontispiece etching by Gisele Celan-Lestrange, Celan's wife and a distinguished artist in her own right who was loyal to him throughout his infidelities, depression, and even his attempt to kill her during a manic episode.
One of the most important poets of the post-war generation, Celan was a deeply troubled man who took his life in 1970, drowning himself in the Seine at the age of 49. Please do not ask us to consider other options.
