The Tale of the Wandering Monk. With FOUR WOODCUTS by SETSUKO.

TRANSLATION BY CHARLES SHIRO INOUYE. #5 of 300 - SIGNED BY ILLUSTRATOR. No markings, dents, names, etc. Not from a smokers home.

Title: The Tale of the Wandering Monk. Izumi Kyoka - Kyoka Izumi is the pen name of a Japanese author of novels, short stories, and kabuki plays who was active during the prewar period. He is best known for a characteristic brand of Romanticism preferring tales of the supernatural heavily influenced by works of the earlier Edo period in Japanese arts and letters, which he tempered with his own personal vision of aesthetics and art in the modern age. He is also considered one of the supreme stylists in modern Japanese literature, and the difficulty and richness of his prose has been frequently noted by fellow authors and critics.

His real name was Kyotaro Izumi. Like Natsume Soseki and other Japanese authors with pen names, Kyoka is usually known by that pen name rather than his family name. This is a scarce limited edition of this work by Izumi Kyoka, signed by illustrator Setsuko. This is number 5 of 300.

This folio is bound in Japanese style pouch-binding, including the traditional title strip, with violet Japanese book-binding cloth. Volume is in excellent condition. This book contains four paintings by Setsuko Ideta, wife of Balthus, that were converted into wood blocks by Keiji Shinohara in his California studio. This edition was designed, set in Monotype Centaur and printed by Michael and Winifred Bixler.

The paper for the prints was hand made from Mulberry by Akio Sakamoto in Kyoka's hometown, Kanazawa, Japan. Velvet-lined clamshell case with printed title label to front panel is in fine condition. Case measures approximately 15" x 18".
