Wanting to share his love of books, George Macy (1900-56), in 1929. Founded the Limited Editions Club that published finely made and finely illustrated limited editions of the classics of literature (with an occasional contemporary title). Most of the books were beautifully illustrated by leading book illustrators, sometimes with signed original art works. Originally, the Limited Editions Club issued twelve books each year that were limited to 1,500 copies. Offered for sale is the LEC's 1942 edition of Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls. Sinclair Lewis, the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Contributed the introduction and the lithograph illustrations were done by Lynd Ward, renown for his illustrations of books. The volume is housed in an orange slipcase with green lettering on the rear foredge, yellow cloth with green cloth binding, gilt lettering and decoration on spine with orange top edge of pages. This copy is highly collectible, as it is one of fifteen unnumbered presentation copies (see impression at bottom of colophon page). This copy was not numbered but presented to S.
