Limited Editions Club the Book of Ecclesiastes Revised King James Version
The Book of Ecclesiastes was written about the year 200 B. By Koheleth (his Hebrew name), meaning Preacher, hence the Greek equivalent Ecclesiastes. His spirit of tempered pessimism, his outpouring of an ageless skepticism and disillusionment, and his brilliant command of language have made his one of the most quoted books in the Old Testament, and, to many, the most modern and applicable: The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. " Apparently a man of means, Koheleth wrote the book after many years of a fairly happy existence that taught him many things: "The race is not to the swift, not the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. Only a worldly man, a man who lived comfortably and pleasantly, who was accepted socially, who may well have traveled outside his native city of Jerusalem, could have written a book like Ecclesiastes. The philosophy of the Preacher is reminiscent of the Epicurean doctrine of making the most of the pleasures of life without overindulgence, and also of the Stoics, in his ideas on time and the cosmic flow of things: One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth forever. The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down.... All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full.... " The first four chapters of the book contain his main conclusions, which are repeated in other forms later on: "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die.... Our edition of Ecclesiastes is a bi-lingual version, with an introduction by the poet Kenneth Rexroth. For the awesome illustrations, we are indebted to Edgar Miller for seven tempura paintings: a frontispiece and six double-page spreads.

They were reproduced by Rainbows, Inc. Of Hazardville, Connecticut, and the Holyoke Lithographing Company of Holyoke, Massachusetts. For the format and design, we owe gratitude to David Way of The Thistle Press in New York.

It was he who decided printing the original Hebrew on each left-hand page facing the English of the revised King James version on the right "En face" is the technical term for this. Way selected the Peninum type for the Hebrew and Bembo for the English text. The Hebrew pages are printed in crimson ink.

Although the line begins on the right in the Hebrew, as it should, the Hebrew pages in our book proceed from the front to the back instead of from what we would call the back to the front as it would in a traditional Hebrew volume. The Thistle Press printed our edition of Ecclesiastes on a heavyweight, white wove rag paper, with a deckle edge, especially made to Mr. Way's specifications by the Curtis Paper Company in Newark, Delaware. The binding of full natural lambskin was accomplished by the venerable William Fortney. There is an allover scroll design worked into the front and back covers, with the spine lettered in pure gold leaf.

This is number 970 of 1500 copies, and is signed by Edgar Miller. The offer includes both the necessary four page Limited Editions Club Monthly Letter and the pre-publication announcement. This book should appeal to almost anyone: to avid readers of the Bible, to students and teachers of philosophy and religion, and because of the outstanding condition of the book and slipcase to serious collectors of Limited Editions Club titles. It would be a book to cherish in any library and thus also would be a terrific gift to a deserving or special individual of almost any age. Thank you for reading this presentation, and good luck in your searches.
