Limited Editions Club The Book of Ruth
The Book of Ruth tells the story of the Moabite Ruth who stays with Naomi, her Israelite mother-in-law, and subsequently meets the prosperous farmer Boaz, a kinsman of her former husband. They make a levirate marriage and become the ancestors of King David. The aim of the Book is to illustrate the ancestry of the Davidic kings. Ruth is regarded as the prototype of the righteous proselyte. When Naomi told her that Jewish women do not go to circuses, she replied, Where you go I will go. When told the Israelites live in houses with. Mazuzot, she said, Where you lodge I will lodge. " Her words, "your people will be my people" seem to imply "I will destroy all idolatry within me. Our very lovely edition is illustrated with paintings by the greatest and most famous painter of miniatures at the time, Afthur Szyk. They are printed in rich color, the reproductive color plates having been made by the Sun Engraving Company in London. The beautiful plates were actually printed on sheets of vellum. The large Weiss type was printed on a heavy Worthy Paper Company Aurelian paper. The story is divided into sections, allowing illustrations to be placed at the proper points. Each section is begun with a large bold initial-letter, designed by Emil Rudolf Weiss, and they were not printed but instead stamped, with leaves of real gold! The binding is an elegant white-and-gold three-quarter leather. The spine and the four corners are covered with sheepskin dyed an ivory white. The sides are covered with a smooth white vellum-paper. On the front side there is a simplification by Arthur Szyk of his own portrait of Ruth; and this simple design is stamped on the front side with leaves of gold. The slipcase is lined with velour for the protection of the leather, the case itself molded to fit the book and then covered with a metallic gold (foil) paper on which the title is printed. The offer includes both the very essential four page LImited Editions Club Monthly Letter and prepublication announcement. It is number 216 of 1950 copies, and is signed by Arthur Szyk. This is an awesome book about an awesome woman.
