The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans Compared Together by That Grave, Learned Philosopher and Historiographer.. Author: PLUTARCH Title: The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans Compared Together by That Grave, Learned Philosopher and Historiographer... Publication: New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1941.

Translation (Greek to French) by James Amyot and (French to English) by Thomas North. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, two paper-covered slipcases with paper labels. Very good to near fine. All volumes tight and internally fine and bright, with some spines (only) showing light speckling; both slipcases very good only -- edgeworn, rubbed and scuffed but complete, with large chip to one panel of second case.

The most famous work by this Greek biographer, historian and philosopher ca. 46-119 AD is this classic, also known as "Parallel Lives" or "Plutarch's Lives" (which expands its contents), a series of 48 biographies arranged in Greek/Roman pairings -- not so much biographies as philosophical ruminations about each.

The 66 biographies here include not only the 23 surviving pairs from the original "Lives, " but also others (such as Artaxerxes, Aratus, Galba, and Otho) not part of the original Lives. " This set is seldom found complete, much less retaining the often-absent slipcases (with paper labels titled "North's Plutarch Volumes I-IV" and "North's Plutarch Volumes V-VIII). Amyot's translation into French first brought it to Western Europe in 1559, while North's translation of that text into English appeared in 1579. Dwiggins created this text and printed it at The Southworth-Anthoensen Press in Portland, Maine -- colophon at rear of final volume notes limitation of 1500 numbered copies (this #1132) signed boldly by Dwiggins.
