Background of the Limited Editions Club. Founded in 1929 by George Macy, The Limited Editions Club (LEC) has published finely designed and printed books from the classics of literature as well as more contemporary writers; illustrated with original artworks by leading book illustrators. Well known "fine artists" were also commissioned for selected works such as the Clubs' Lysistrata illustrated and signed by Pablo Picasso and Ulysses illustrated and signed by Henri Matisse.Subsequent ownership passed through the Ziff-Davis Publishing Company and the Cardavon Press. Finally, in 1978, the club was acquired by Sidney Shiff, who was retired from Wall Street and had an interest in the production of fine books. The later Shiff years of the clubs' operation introduced Livres d'Artiste (Deluxe Edition Books) illustrated with original artwork by major "fine art" artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Balthus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elizabeth Catlett, Francesco Clemente, Ellsworth Kelly, Sean Scully, Alice Neel, and others. He gradually reduced the limitations that ranged from 1500 to a high of 2000 during the Cardavon ownership years down to as few as only 300 volumes. Making these books extremely collectible for serious collectors of fine art as well as for collectors of fine literature published in fine press editions.
Each copy is numbered, and most were signed by the illustrator, author or other contributor to the volumes' production. The Club ceased operations in 2012 after publishing over 575 titles in 83 years of operation. This item is in the category "Books & Magazines\Antiquarian & Collectible".
