This edition of Ulysses is considered to be a high water for The Limited Editions Club while under the direction of founder George Macy, as well. As being a cultural landmark in and of itself, having brought together two of era's most popular and titanic figures of European Modernism. Famously, Matisse's six illustrations interpret subjects from Homer's.As opposed to the assigned text (which he may or may not have read). While now celebrated as being an apt companion to Joyce's masterwork, these images were summarily rebuffed by Joyce himself, who after 250 of 1500 planned copies refused to sign any others in protest, leaving the rest solely to Matisse. These illustrations, depicting Aeolus, Calypso, Cyclops, Ithaca, and Nausicaa, are now widely respected as independent works within the artist's oeuvre. This copy is one of remaining number signed only by Matisse, stated number 500 of 1500. An exemplary, bright, and strong copy of an absolute work of art, and a true artifact in its own right.
